오늘의 표현 : The president moved the product launch up a week. (회장님이 제품 출시를 1주일 앞당겼다.)

move up은 크게 3가지 뜻이 있습니다. 무조건 외우려 하지 말고 조금만 생각해 보면 별로 어렵지 않습니다.

1. 먼저 ‘위로 옮기다’의 의미가 있습니다.

Please move these boxes up to the top shelf. (그 상자들을 맨 위 선반에 올려주세요.)

2. 이 뜻이 발전해 ‘승진시키다’의 의미도 됩니다.

I started my job here as a clerk, but I moved up quickly and now I own the company. (나는 사환으로 일을 시작했지만 빨리 승진해 지금은 회사 소유주가 됐다.)

3. 오늘의 표현에 쓰인 대로 예정된 행사 날짜나 시간을 앞당기다(To change the date or time of some scheduled event to an earlier date or time)의 의미로도 사용됩니다.

Several of our friends were leaving town in July, so we moved up our party to early June. (몇몇 친구가 7월에 떠날 것이어서 우리는 파티를 6월 초로 앞당겼다.)

To avoid staying too late tonight, we should move the meeting up a few hours. (오늘 밤늦게까지 남아 있지 않으려면 우리는 회의를 몇 시간 앞당겨야 한다.)

The deadline has been moved up a week. (마감일이 1주일 앞당겨지다.)

‘앞당겨지다’의 반대 표현인 ‘늦추다’ ‘연기하다’는 postpone이죠. 다른 표현으로 put off, defer, push back도 있습니다.

The meeting has been put off until Friday. (그 회의는 금요일까지 연기됐다.)

The decision has been deferred until tomorrow. (결정은 내일까지 연기됐다.)

The launch date for the new Web site has been pushed back again. (새 웹사이트 시작 일자가 또 연기됐다.)

defer라는 단어를 배운 김에 조금 어려운 단어도 알려드리겠습니다. 바로 procrastinate입니다. 이것은 ‘연기하다’의 의미를 가진 고급 단어입니다. 주로 습관적인 부주의나 게으름 때문에 늦는(To put off doing something, especially out of habitual carelessness or laziness) 경우를 묘사하는 동사입니다.

Procrastination in business could make you lose promising opportunities. (사업에서 연기를 하면 당신은 가망성 높은 기회를 잃을 수 있다.)
